Overview

Sophia Anthony (b. 1997) is an artist whose work draws from cinema, art history, and found imagery to create filmic scenes of intimate domestic interiors. Her work evokes an uncanny, ambiguous sense of space through varied approaches to painting, from hyperreal details in flowers to minimal abstraction in architectural motifs. These composite surroundings influence the figures within her works, who reflect in mirrors and engage in mysterious inner worlds of memory and imagination.

Anthony received her MFA from the University of Chicago in 2022 after earning dual undergraduate degrees from Southwestern University in Studio Art (BFA) and Physics (BA), graduating summa cum laude in 2019. She has also studied at the Tyler School of Art in Temple University. Anthony’s work has been exhibited at Make Room, Los Angeles, CA; Various Small Fires, Dallas, TX; Pencil on Paper Gallery, Dallas, TX, and Logan Center Gallery, Chicago, IL, among others. Her work has been published in New American Pantings West Issue #168 and MFA Annual Issue #177. She currently lives and works in Dallas, TX.
