Reed van Brunschot

Reed van Brunschot is a Peruvian-Dutch American visual artist working in mixed media, sculpture, performance, installation, painting, and video. Her work takes on feelings of displacement and daily life through what she calls transitional moments, situations that can suddenly change in form or sentiment. By building relationships between unexpected elements, she stages a dialogue between the viewer and the absurd object, speaking in quotidian symbolism around themes of childhood, home life, motherhood, and the ephemeral. Her exhibition THE NEW FAMILIAR (Make Room, Los Angeles, 2018), installed offsite in the bedroom of a private residential apartment in downtown Los Angeles, drew on a period during her pregnancy when she was largely bedridden in a new apartment: an undulating floor of vinyl wood planks laid over air mattresses, a wall sculpture of a spinning ceiling fan set into a popcorn-painted panel, and a looping video projection of a breast dripping milk together asked viewers to consider the politics of motherhood and their engagement with the visual elements of everyday life.

Van Brunschot studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and the School of Visual Arts in New York, and completed her MFA at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. She has exhibited in the Netherlands, Brazil, and the United States.
