Julia Maiuri

Julia Maiuri (b. 1991, Michigan) lives and works in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Her paintings approach questions of consciousness and subjectivity through the language of cinema, drawing on the stylized aesthetic of film noir. Working without plot or framing narrative, Maiuri isolates the visual devices Hollywood uses to build psychological drama, including extreme close-ups, tightly cropped frames, cast shadows, obscured faces, high contrast, and dissolve transitions. In her canvases the movement of film is arrested between frames, producing superimposed images in which the viewer's perspective becomes confused: doubled sets of eyes, ambiguous hands, and figures that may be the viewer's own reflection. The work reflects on the paradox of encountering oneself as another, and on why images composed according to proven cinematic formulas reliably provoke emotional response.

Maiuri received her MFA in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (2022) and her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Wayne State University, Detroit (2013). Solo exhibitions include Eaves, 12.26, Dallas (2025); Yesterday & The End, Workplace, London (2023); Approach of Another, Make Room, Los Angeles (2023); and Mindscreen, 12.26, Dallas (2022).

Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Fredericks & Freiser, New York (2025); TOA Presents, Minneapolis (2025); Martha's, Austin (2024); Make Room, Los Angeles (Taxonomies of Imagination, 2022); Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, New York (2022); and MAMOTH, London (2022). She received an Artist Initiative Grant in Visual Art from the Minnesota State Arts Board (2018). Her work has been featured in ArtReview, Dazed, Artsy, The Creative Independent, ArtMaze Mag, Floorr Magazine, and PATRON Magazine.
