Gus Monday

Gus Monday (b. 2000, Cape Town, South Africa) lives and works in London. Working in painting and drawing, he examines how institutional and spatial frameworks, from museums and galleries to architectures of belief, mediate systems of power, care, and omission. His paintings, in oil on linen mounted on aluminium panels, reconstruct modernist and symbolic architecture as coded interiors in which ideology, governance, and desire are organized through design. Figures are largely absent; the viewer is instead positioned inside these environments, where authority registers in furniture, sightlines, and the choreography of the room. Trained as a draughtsman, Monday builds his compositions with measured precision, working layer by layer and accompanying the paintings with graphite and ink studies of specific buildings.

Monday received his MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London (2024) and his BA in Fine Art with First Class Honours from the City and Guilds of London Art School (2023), following studies at Central Saint Martins, London. His solo exhibition Three Rooms - Museum, Institution, Gallery was held at Carl Kostyál, London, in 2025.

His work was presented at Frieze Los Angeles with Southern Guild in 2026. He was nominated for the New Blood Emerging Art Prize and shortlisted for the Hari Art Prize (both 2023).
