Bix Archer

Portrait of Bix Archer

Bix Archer (b. 1997) is an artist from San Francisco, based in New York City. Her practice consists of observational oil paintings of everyday life. Working primarily from direct observation and forgoing the use of a camera or digital tools, she plays with various ways of mediating and expanding visual experience, including working from memory and written observation, the construction of models, and collaboration. Her paintings attend to domestic and in-between spaces and the traces of activity left within them, often collapsing multiple remembered moments into single images.

Archer received her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale School of Art in 2025 and a BA from Yale College in 2019. Solo exhibitions include Bliss Maintenance, Make Room, Los Angeles (2026); Slipstream, Hesse Flatow, New York (2026); and Viewing Room: Small Town at the Edge of Cyberspace, Make Room, Los Angeles (2022). Group exhibitions include Pursuit of Happiness, Schneider Museum of Art, Ashland, OR (2026); Power Line, Perrotin, New York (2025); The Mind's Eye, Make Room, Los Angeles (2025); 500 Below, Smoke the Moon, Santa Fe (2023); and Urban Whispers, WOAW Gallery, Hong Kong (2021).

She is a two-time recipient of grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (2020, 2024) and has been an artist in residence at the Royal Drawing School at Dumfries House, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Yale-Norfolk School of Art. In 2025 she was a teaching fellow through the Yale Prison Education Initiative, and in 2026 she was the Visiting Artist and Scholar in Teaching at Southern Oregon University. She has led public workshops and lectures at MoMA, the Yale Center for British Art, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
